The
northern coast of Borneo easily holds a title for the most
famous dive destination in all of Malaysia.
Sipidan Island off the north east coast is a tiny island
with spectacular wall diving. Steep underwater coral cliffs
on this oceanic pinnacle plummet from near the surface to
black 600-metres depth. Turtles of various species are seen
on every dive as they come in to the island to mate and
lay eggs on the white sand beaches that ring the island.
Pulau Mabul and Kapalai island, offers visiting divers
a rich marine environment to dazzle the senses. For beginners,
dive coureces are available from basic through to assistant
level for the advance divers.
Kota Kinabalu on the east side of the main island of Borneo
has dives on the mainland and offshore reefs. Visitors often
tie a dive trip with a day visiting inland areas such as
the famous orangutan rehabilitation centre.
On the Malaysian Peninsula some excellent diving is to
be found on the shores and island off Mersing on the south
east coast. Rawa island, near Mersing, is famous as the
world largest turtles, the endangered Leatherback, come
to nest on its beaches.
Nearby, Tioman Island has untouched diving and spectacular
above water mountain scenery. These and other island up
to the northern border can be accessed through Singapore
as well as Kuala Lumpur.
