is Named after the 28th sultan of Brunei, in 1958 and
stands next to the Sungai Kedayan in its own artificial
lagoon. It is one of the tallest buildings in the city
and one of the most impressive structures in South-East
Asia.
The interior is simple but tasteful,. The floor and walls
are made from the finest Italian marble; the stained-glass
windows were crafted in England; and the luxurious carpets
were flown in from Saudi Arabia and Belgium. A Venetian
mosaic of 3.5 million pieces decorates the inside of the
main dome, and pools and quadrants surrounding the building
with elegant reflections. The ceremonial stone boat sitting
in the lagoon is a replica of a 16th-century mahligai

The Istana Nurul Iman
The Istana Nurul Iman, the sultan's palace,
is Bandar Seri Begawan's most popular tourist attraction.
It contains a tropical garden and is surrounded by dense
tropical forest and waterways. The sultan's palace, Istana
Nurul Iman, is an impressive sight, especially when lit
up at night. It is larger than the Vatican Palace and
no expense was spared: It cost US$350 million and, among
other features, has 1788 rooms, 200 toilets and a banquet
hall with seating for 4000. Unfortunately, the istana
is only open to the public during Hari Raya Aidilfitri,
the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, when the sultan
often deigns to meet his people. |
